SAGAR (MP), Sep 6 (HS): Ten people died and several others fell ill after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district on Sunday, officials said, with a preliminary investigation suggesting that the liquor may have been supplied from Lalitpur in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

A local BJP MLA, however, claimed that the death toll had risen to 11 following suspected consumption of spurious liquor in villages under Banda tehsil of the district.

A former Congress legislator said people from several villages in the Banda development block had consumed liquor on Saturday night. Their health reportedly deteriorated afterwards, following which they were taken to hospitals. Several of them were declared dead, he said.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered a probe into the incident.
