New Delhi, September 05 (H.S.): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sought the intervention of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) amid the growing controversy over 1,013 reserved lecturer vacancies in various government institutions in Punjab.

BJP national office in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh wrote to NCSC Chairman Kishor Makwana on Saturday, urging the commission to intervene immediately in the matter.

Chugh said in his letter that while teachers across the country were being honoured on Teachers’ Day, Scheduled Caste and Backward Class teachers in Punjab were being forced to take to the streets to demand their constitutional rights. He described the situation as unfortunate and shameful.

The BJP leader alleged that the manner in which the recruitment process had been handled by the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab reflected what he described as an anti-Scheduled Caste and anti-reservation mindset.

The Scheduled Caste and Backward Class Teachers’ Association has been demanding the early filling of the 1,013 vacant posts. The association has alleged that the prescribed 25 per cent reservation for Scheduled Castes and 12 per cent reservation for Backward Classes was not properly implemented in the recruitment process.

The Punjab Education Recruitment Directorate had announced recruitment for 1,013 lecturer-cadre posts, comprising 829 fresh vacancies and 184 backlog vacancies. The recruitment covers lecturer posts across various subjects.

Chugh urged the NCSC to summon the complete reservation roster and all relevant recruitment records from the Punjab government. He also requested the commission to conduct a detailed review of the recruitment process and direct the state government to take necessary corrective measures.

He said such action was essential to ensure that eligible candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Backward Class communities receive the constitutional rights to reservation guaranteed to them.

The BJP has maintained that the issue requires urgent attention to ensure transparency and proper implementation of reservation provisions in the recruitment process.
