Chandigarh, 05 September (H.S.): Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday flagged off an Anti-Drug and Wellness Walkathon from Sukhna Lake, urging people to actively participate in the fight against drug abuse and contribute towards building a drug-free India.

Speaking to the media, Kataria said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a drug-free India can be achieved only through public participation and greater awareness. He said Punjab and Chandigarh are lands of gurus and bravehearts, with a long tradition of standing against social evils.

The Governor also highlighted Punjab’s contribution to national defence and said the state has made immense sacrifices for protecting the country’s borders over the years.

Expressing concern over the inflow of illegal drugs into the region, Kataria said such networks cannot function without local support. He said it was worrying that some people were treating the drug trade as a source of income despite its damaging impact on the future of younger generations.

He appealed to those involved in such activities to abandon the illegal trade and work in the larger interest of society. The walkathon was organised to spread awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
