Thiruvananthapuram, 05 September (H.S.): Kerala is experiencing unusually hot weather in September as a weakening southwest monsoon has pushed temperatures higher across the State, even before the rainy season has officially withdrawn.

The sharp rise in temperature during what is normally part of the monsoon season has caused concern, with Punalur recording temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius. Several other parts of Kerala have also reported warmer conditions as rainfall remained weak over the past week.

The southwest monsoon, which is expected to begin withdrawing this month, has so far left Kerala with a rainfall deficit of 23 per cent. Although the monsoon arrived on June 1, raising hopes of a good rainy season, precipitation subsequently weakened considerably.

Between August 27 and September 2, Kerala recorded a rainfall deficit of 64 per cent. Against the normal rainfall of 76.2 mm for the period, the State received only 27.4 mm. Since June, Kerala has received 1,369.6 mm of rain compared with the normal 1,769.9 mm.

With the southwest monsoon nearing its withdrawal, attention is now turning to the northeast monsoon, locally known as Thulavarsham, which normally lasts from October to December. Southern and central Kerala generally receive a larger share of rainfall during this season. While extremely heavy rainfall is not presently expected, reasonably good precipitation is anticipated.

The prolonged dry spell and higher temperatures have also triggered a noticeable increase in electricity consumption across Kerala.

Daily power consumption recently crossed 94 million units, compared with below 80 million units when the southwest monsoon was active. Peak-hour electricity demand has also climbed to around 4,850 MW, considerably higher than the usual level of below 4,000 MW.

The combination of deficient rainfall, rising temperatures and increasing power demand has heightened concerns as Kerala awaits the northeast monsoon for relief.
