Guwahati, 05 September (HS): Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya felicitated 95-year-old Prafulla Kumar Borthakur, the state’s senior-most retired primary school teacher, at his residence in Jamugurihat on Teachers’ Day on Saturday.

The felicitation was organised under the ‘Governor Assam Varishtha Shikshak Samman’ initiative, through which the Governor directed all District Commissioners to honour the oldest retired primary school teacher in their respective districts in recognition of their lifelong contribution to education.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Acharya said teachers play an invaluable role in shaping generations and strengthening the intellectual and social fabric of the nation. He emphasised that respecting and honouring teachers has always been an integral part of India’s heritage and tradition.

Referring to Borthakur’s long teaching career, the Governor said he had witnessed the transformation of several generations and left a lasting impact through the values, knowledge and confidence imparted to his students.

The Governor also stressed the important role of teachers in building knowledgeable, responsible, compassionate and socially conscious citizens as Assam and the country work towards the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’.

Borthakur was presented with a citation, phulam gamosa, shawl, xorai, japi, fruit basket, umbrella and a cheque of ₹51,000.

Similar felicitation programmes were organised across Assam at district and Elementary Education Block levels. At the district level, 35 senior-most retired primary teachers were felicitated at their homes, while 113 retired teachers were honoured at the Elementary Education Block level by Block Elementary Education Officers.

In total, 148 senior-most retired elementary education teachers were honoured across the state under the initiative. Government representatives personally visited the teachers’ homes to extend the felicitation, highlighting the state’s respect for the teaching community.---------
