New Delhi, 04 September (H.S.): Serious allegations of brutality in police custody have been levelled against the Punjab Police over the alleged treatment of a Sikh youth who had shown a black flag during a programme of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Sheron village of the Sunam Assembly constituency. BJP headquarters in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh on Friday wrote to Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), seeking immediate intervention in the matter.

In his letter, Tarun Chugh said that on September 2, during Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s ‘Lok Milni’ programme, a local youth, Mohanjeet Singh, had displayed a black flag as a peaceful protest over the problem of drug abuse. Following the incident, Punjab Police allegedly took him into custody and subjected him to torture. He alleged that Mohanjeet Singh was assaulted in custody, subjected to religious desecration and that the women members of his family were also mistreated.

According to the letter, a video call was made while the victim was allegedly being subjected to torture. MP Chugh urged the NHRC to take suo motu cognisance of the matter and also sought the deployment of an independent investigation team to probe the incident.
