Kolkata, 04 September (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday led a special ‘Tribute Walk’ in Kolkata to mark the birth centenary of legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar.

The walk began from Rabindra Sadan and witnessed the participation of senior and young artistes from the Bengali film industry, technicians and representatives associated with the entertainment sector. Participants paid tribute to Uttam Kumar and recalled his enduring legacy and immense contribution to Bengali cinema.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister also inaugurated a special exhibition showcasing the life and cinematic journey of the legendary actor. The birth centenary celebrations were later held at the Ektara Mukta Mancha, where Uttam Kumar was remembered through a cake-cutting ceremony and the serving of traditional Bengali payesh.

A series of programmes is being organised across Kolkata to commemorate Uttam Kumar’s birth centenary. These include film screenings, exhibitions and heritage walks covering places associated with the actor’s life and career.

The state government has also initiated plans to establish the Uttam Kumar Film Centre in New Town. In addition, a proposal for a large cultural complex dedicated to the memory of the legendary actor has been announced.

Several prominent personalities from the Bengali film industry attended the celebrations. The participation of artistes and other film professionals added significance to the centenary events, which are aimed at introducing Uttam Kumar’s films, legacy and contribution to cinema to a new generation.
