Aichi-Nagoya, 30 September (H.S.): Indian boxer Priya Ghanghas ended her Asian Games debut with a bronze medal after losing her women’s 60kg semifinal to China’s former world champion Yang Chengyu on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old from Haryana’s Jhajjar district suffered a 1-4 defeat against the experienced Chinese boxer in the semifinal held in Nishio. Ghanghas put up a strong challenge, but Yang Chengyu drew on her experience to secure victory. By reaching the semifinals, Ghanghas had already assured herself of a bronze medal.

Ghanghas has produced a series of impressive performances in recent months. She won gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the 2026 Elite Asian Championships, the 2026 Usti nad Labem Grand Prix and the 2026 Boxam Tournament. She also won a bronze medal at the 2025 Thailand Open.

Known for her technical precision, ring awareness and composed approach, Ghanghas made an immediate impact on her Asian Games debut by securing a podium finish.

Indian boxers have also improved on the country’s performance at the previous edition of the Asian Games. India won four boxing medals at the previous Games, comprising one silver and three bronze medals. At the 2026 Asian Games, Indian boxers have so far secured six medals.

India’s Parveen Hooda in the women’s 65kg category and Ankush Panghal in the men’s 80kg category have already reached their respective finals. Both will take to the ring on Friday in pursuit of gold medals.
