Aichi-Nagoya, 30 September (H.S.): Indian boxer Kapil Pokhriya secured a bronze medal in the men’s 90kg category at the Asian Games 2026 after losing his semi-final bout to reigning world champion Turabek Khabibullaev of Uzbekistan by a 1-4 split decision on Wednesday.

Turabek applied pressure from the opening bell, taking the first round 5-0 before extending his advantage to 4-1 in the second. Pokhriya attempted to mount a comeback but was unable to close the gap against his Uzbek opponent. Turabek was eventually declared the winner by a majority decision.

Turabek, a bronze medallist at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, entered the bout as a strong contender given his status as the reigning world champion.

Hailing from Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand, Pokhriya earned his place in the Indian boxing team through hard work and consistent performances despite limited sporting facilities. Known for his strength and powerful punching in the 90kg division, he has produced a series of strong performances at the national level.

Pokhriya won gold at the 2025 National Games and followed it with a silver medal at the 2026 Usti nad Labem Grand Prix. His consistent form earned him selection for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

With Pokhriya’s bronze, India’s overall medal tally at the Asian Games 2026 has risen to 59. India has moved to seventh place in the medal standings, with 10 gold, 21 silver and 28 bronze medals.
