Women’s Squash Team Also Remain in Medal Contention

Aichi-Nagoya, 30 September (H.S.): India’s wrestling campaign at the Asian Games 2026 began with mixed results on Wednesday, as Sunil Kumar advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s Greco-Roman 87kg category, while Nisha Dahiya’s campaign came to an end in the women’s freestyle 68kg Round of 16.

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s squash team secured a place in the semi-finals and assured itself of a medal after defeating Singapore in the quarter-finals.

In the Greco-Roman 87kg category, Sunil Kumar defeated Muhammad Sultanzoda by technical superiority. Sunil accumulated nine points during the bout, while his opponent failed to register a single point. The victory earned Sunil a place in the semi-finals.

In the women’s freestyle 68kg category, Nisha Dahiya’s campaign ended in the Round of 16 after she was defeated 4-0 by North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum.

The contest was closely fought, but the North Korean wrestler established a four-point lead through technical superiority in the opening period, an advantage Nisha was unable to overturn.

India Strike Gold in Archery

Earlier, India’s women’s compound archery team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikita Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep defeated China 238-234 to win the gold medal.

The Indian trio maintained the upper hand from the opening phase and never allowed China to mount a comeback.

India opened the contest with three 10s in the first rotation to take a 30-27 lead. After the second rotation, India remained ahead 60-58, before extending its advantage to 119-116 by the halfway stage. The Indian archers continued to hold their nerve in the second half, taking a 178-176 lead after the third phase.

In the final phase, India continued to find the target with precision to finish on 238 points and secure a four-point victory.

With the performance, the Indian team equalled the world record of 238 points set by South Korea in 2014.

The gold was Jyothi Surekha Vennam’s fourth Asian Games title, while Chikita Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep claimed their maiden Asian Games gold medals on their debut at the continental event.

Women’s Squash Team Reach Semi-finals

The Indian women’s squash team secured a medal on Tuesday by defeating Singapore 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

Tanvi Khanna gave India the lead in the opening match, defeating Yi Yiann Au Yeong 3-1. Tanvi won 11-6, 5-11, 15-13, 11-1 to put India ahead.

Anahat Singh then sealed India’s victory with a straight-games 3-0 win over Yi Yan Au Yeong. Anahat prevailed 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 to send India into the semi-finals.

India’s semi-final opponent has yet to be determined.
