Chennai, 30 Sept (H.S.): The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) may join the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) alliance, with Soumya Anbumani being considered for a ministerial position, according to reports suggesting a possible political realignment after the October 6 Assembly bypolls.

The reports come as Chief Minister Vijay’s government seeks to strengthen its position in the Assembly amid uncertainty over continued support from the two Communist parties. Neither the proposed alliance nor the possible ministerial appointment has been officially confirmed.

Tamil Nadu voted on April 23, and counting took place on May 4. The election witnessed a four-way contest involving the DMK alliance, the AIADMK alliance, TVK and Naam Tamilar Katchi. No party secured the 118 seats required for a majority.

TVK emerged as the largest party with 107 seats and formed the government with support from Congress, the CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Indian Union Muslim League.

Bypolls in Madurantakam and Dharapuram, two of the seven vacant Assembly constituencies, are scheduled for October 6. Winning both would take TVK’s strength to 109. Even victories in the remaining five constituencies would leave it four seats short of the majority mark.

The CPI and CPI(M), which initially supported the government, have said they are outside the TVK alliance and are contesting the bypolls separately. Their position has increased the importance of securing additional legislative backing.

PMK, which has four MLAs and has been associated with the AIADMK-BJP alliance, could provide that support.

Reports have also pointed to a softer approach towards the government by PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss, who had initially criticised it sharply.

A Cabinet reshuffle is reportedly being considered after the bypolls, involving possible ministerial departures and portfolio changes. If PMK joins the alliance, it could receive Cabinet representation. Vijay is said to have indicated his willingness to accommodate the party in government.
