Guwahati, 30 September (HS): The Barak Valley is set to get its first agriculture college, with the Assam Cabinet approving 84.6 acres of land at Patharkandi in support of the proposed institution, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.

Sharing the development on Social media, Sarma said the new college would become Assam’s fourt agriculture college and the first such institution in the Barak Valley.

According to the Chief Minister, the project is expected to open up avenues for higher education, agricultural research and innovation for students and young people in the region.

“Assam is going to get its fourth agriculture college and the Barak Valley its first,” Sarma said, while announcing the Cabinet’s approval for the allocation of 84.6 acres at Patharkandi.

The proposed institution is also being seen as an expansion of agricultural education infrastructure beyond the Brahmaputra Valley.

The Barak Valley has witnessed demands for greater attention to development and educational infrastructure in the region. The state government has maintained that development initiatives are being taken across both the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys.

The Cabinet’s decision has generated enthusiasm among people in the Barak Valley, particularly over the prospect of a dedicated institution for agricultural education and research in the region.------------
