New Delhi, 30 September (H.S.): Opposition parties have criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over posters put up in central Delhi targeting leaders of the opposition alliance ahead of a meeting to discuss the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The opposition described the posters, which appeared in central Delhi on Wednesday, as a political attack. The posters featured images of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, Uddhav Thackeray, Tejashwi Yadav and M.K. Stalin, among others, with satirical and disparaging references directed at the leaders.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore reacted to the posters on the social media platform X, taking a jibe at Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In his post, Tagore said that Shah would never learn to be courageous and would continue resorting to such measures.

The opposition alliance meeting is expected to focus on the SIR process, alleged differences within the Election Commission and the demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. According to sources, the meeting may also discuss a draft proposal for moving a motion in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha seeking Kumar’s removal.

It may be recalled that a day earlier, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) had reiterated its demand for the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner. The Congress also called for an immediate halt to the SIR process and demanded the restoration of 13.30 crore names allegedly removed from electoral rolls. The party had also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
