New Delhi, 30 September (H.S.):

The central government has approved an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) for the national capital to improve traffic management and ease congestion across Delhi. The system will enable real-time management of 2,242 key traffic corridors, with Rs. 1,789.52 crore sanctioned for the project.

The proposal was approved on Wednesday by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw briefed the national media at the National Media Centre on the decisions taken by the Cabinet.

Under the project, artificial intelligence-powered traffic signals will be installed across the city. These signals will dynamically adjust traffic-light timings based on prevailing traffic conditions. Emergency vehicles will be given priority, while the system will also be capable of rapidly detecting traffic congestion and road accidents.

The technology will provide motorists with timely information on traffic conditions, including diversions and parking availability, enabling them to plan their journeys more efficiently.

The project will comprise 1,092 Adaptive Traffic Control System locations and 1,029 enforcement sites. Its implementation will follow a performance-based approach, with each phase commencing only after an assessment of the preceding phase against prescribed testing, commissioning, acceptance and performance criteria.

The project will be implemented in three phases over the next two years and will include five years of operation and maintenance.
