Chennai, September 3 (H.S.): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday announced the establishment of a world-class Tamil Nadu Olympic City in Chennai under Rule 110 in the State Assembly.

According to the announcement, the Olympic City will be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority and will feature sports arenas, modern sporting equipment, a High Performance Training Centre and dedicated Sports Science and Sports Medicine centres.

The facility will also include accommodation for sportspersons and coaches. The proposed integrated sports hub is aimed at providing athletes with advanced training and support facilities and helping sportspersons from Tamil Nadu achieve better results at the Olympic Games and other international sporting events.

The Chief Minister also announced plans to establish a dedicated motorsports city in Chennai to facilitate the hosting of Formula 1-4 races.

The announcement comes amid efforts at the national level to strengthen the motorsports ecosystem and explore the possibility of bringing major international motorsport events back to India.

In June, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports constituted a task force to monitor motorsports and examine measures aimed at bringing Formula 1 racing back to India. The ministry has indicated a vision of bringing back F1 racing to the country by the end of 2028.

The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) has also discussed the development of motorsports in the country, including efforts to promote Indian drivers and attract international competitions.

The proposed Olympic City is expected to bring multiple sports facilities and athlete-support infrastructure together at one location, with an emphasis on training, sports science and sports medicine.
