Kolkata, 03 September (H.S.) : Train services were disrupted in Murshidabad on Thursday after a section of railway track between New Farakka Junction and Tildanga stations reportedly sank amid incessant heavy rainfall.

The incident was reported on the route connecting New Farakka Junction with Howrah, leaving several important trains bound for Howrah stranded or delayed.

According to railway sources, a portion of the up line near the entry area of Farakka Barrage, close to New Farakka station, was damaged after the soil beneath the track gave way due to the heavy rain. Initial information suggests that soil erosion and waterlogging weakened the foundation below the tracks.

Railway personnel reached the spot soon after the incident was reported and began restoration work. Repair operations are being carried out on a priority basis to restore normal train movement as quickly as possible.

As an interim measure, the railway authorities are attempting to operate trains using the down line alongside the affected up line to minimise disruption to services.

Several important trains, including the Padatik Express, Yogbani Express, Gour Express and Darjeeling Mail, have been affected by the disruption. Passengers have been facing delays and are being forced to wait for extended periods.

Railway officials are continuously monitoring the condition of the affected section. Full restoration of services will depend on the completion of repairs and the track being declared safe for train operations.

In view of the continuing heavy rainfall, railway authorities have also intensified monitoring of tracks and other vulnerable sections in the surrounding area to prevent further disruptions.
