Guwahati, 03 September (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday extended birthday greetings to legendary athlete and Arjuna Awardee Bhogeswar Baruah on the occasion of State Sports Day.

In a social media post, Sarma described Baruah as a legendary sportsperson of Assam and the first person from Assam and the Northeast to receive the Arjuna Award.

The Chief Minister said the Assam government has been continuously working for the development of the sports sector and improvement of sports infrastructure in the state. He said the government is committed to ensuring that no talented sportsperson is deprived of sporting facilities for any reason.

Sarma also said efforts are being made to encourage the younger generation to take up sports and to identify at least one sporting talent from every part of Assam.

He expressed hope that the state’s sports arena would shine with more success stories like those of Lovlina Borgohain, Hima Das, Nayanmoni Saikia, Riyan Parag and Uma Chhetri and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting sporting talent in Assam.------------
