New Delhi, 29 September (H.S.): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested Jharna Mistry, a proclaimed offender wanted in connection with a murder case linked to the 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal.

Jharna Mistry, the wife of co-accused Sanjay Mistry, had been absconding since the registration of the FIR in 2021. The CBI had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to her arrest.

According to the CBI, Mistry was arrested from Ghoshpara in Santoshpur, South 24 Parganas district. She had never appeared during the investigation or the subsequent court proceedings in the case. Following her arrest, she was being produced before the competent court in Barrackpore on Tuesday.

In compliance with an August 19, 2021 order of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI registered the case on August 27, 2021. The agency had taken over FIR No. 345/2021, registered at Jagaddal Police Station in North 24 Parganas district on May 3, 2021. The FIR related to post-poll violence and contained allegations concerning the murder of the complainant's mother, Shobha Rani Mondal.

After completing its investigation, the CBI filed a supplementary chargesheet on December 29, 2021, against a total of 13 accused persons. Jharna Mistry was also named in the chargesheet.

According to the CBI, as Mistry had remained absconding and evaded the judicial proceedings, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Barrackpore, declared her a proclaimed offender through an order dated October 3, 2023.
