SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami and Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj honour visiting delegation

Amritsar, 28 September (H.S.): US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Monday paid obeisance at Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib along with a 28-member American delegation. During the visit, he listened to Gurbani Kirtan and was briefed about the traditions, religious discipline and spirit of selfless service associated with Sri Harmandir Sahib.

This was reportedly Gor’s second visit. He had also visited Sri Harmandir Sahib around 15 years ago.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami and Acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj welcomed the US Ambassador at the Information Centre. Gor was honoured with a golden model of Sri Harmandir Sahib, religious literature and a traditional shawl.

Dhami said Sri Harmandir Sahib is a spiritual centre for humanity, where people belonging to different religions, communities and countries are welcomed without discrimination. He said the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib promote equality, service and the welfare of all.

During the interaction, the SGPC also raised the issue of a recent poster linked to the US Department of Homeland Security that used the name “Mr Singh”. The SGPC had earlier objected to the post and written to the US Embassy, following which the controversial post was removed. Dhami urged the delegation to ensure that similar incidents are avoided in the future.

He also highlighted the contribution of Punjabis, particularly the Sikh community, to the development of the United States and stressed the need to ensure the safety and dignity of all communities living there.

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj said devotees from across the world visit Sri Harmandir Sahib and every visitor is treated with respect in accordance with the traditions of the Guru’s house. He said issues concerning Sikhs living in the United States were also discussed with the delegation.

Sergio Gor also recorded his impressions in the visitor’s book, describing his return to Sri Harmandir Sahib as a special experience.

Several SGPC officials, Sri Darbar Sahib functionaries and members of the US delegation were present on the occasion.
