Morigaon (Assam), 28 September (HS): The search for two people who went missing after a handmade boat capsized in the Brahmaputra river in Assam’s Morigaon district continued for the second consecutive day on Monday.

The incident occurred in the Mohmari Pathar area under Lahorighat police station at around 7 pm on Sunday. Police teams from Lahorighat and Bheluguri reached the spot following the information, while a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) from Moirabari also joined the rescue operation.

According to the preliminary investigation, the boat was carrying 11 people and was crossing the Brahmaputra from a nearby char area when it capsized in the river. Several passengers were rescued following the incident. Four of those rescued were reportedly in serious condition and were admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Despite an extensive search, two passengers remained untraced. They have been identified as Afia Khatun, 28, of Betabori village, and Saidul Islam, 58, of Bolobari village, both in Morigaon district.

The SDRF, police personnel and local fishermen continued the search operation in the Brahmaputra till the latest reports were received.----------
