Melbourbe, 28 September (H.S.): Cricket Australia (CA) has appointed former Australian cricketer David Boon as its interim chair. He will assume the role on October 28 following current chair Mike Baird’s decision to step down after the board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Baird had served on the Cricket Australia board for six years and had been chair since February 2023. He informed the board that he would not seek reappointment and would step down following the AGM.

Boon said, as quoted by Cricket Australia, “It is a great honour to take on the role of interim chair of Cricket Australia. This is an incredibly exciting and challenging time for the game. I look forward to leading the board in making decisions that ensure the long-term health and growth of cricket in Australia, while advancing the interests of Australian cricket globally.”

Boon joined the Cricket Australia board in February 2025. Before that, he served as a director of Cricket Tasmania for nine years, including three years as chair. The former Australian international cricketer also has extensive experience in cricket administration. He has served as an ICC match referee and as Cricket Tasmania’s general manager of cricket. He was also a member of the Australian selection panel from 2000 to 2011.

Boon praised Mike Baird’s leadership, saying he had demonstrated a strong commitment to Australian cricket, from grassroots clubs to Cricket Australia and the ICC board.

Baird, who is stepping down, welcomed Boon’s readiness to take on the role of interim chair of Cricket Australia. He said he would work with Boon over the coming weeks to complete the transition of responsibilities.

According to Cricket Australia, the process of appointing a permanent chair will begin in the months following the AGM.
