Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Sunday remembered those who died in the Karur crowd crush a year ago, saying the pain of the tragedy remained with the victims’ families and people across Tamil Nadu.

In a message posted on the first anniversary of the September 27, 2025, incident, the TVK president called it an “unhealed wound” in his life and in the hearts of the people of Karur. He said the day continued to be among the most painful he had experienced.

The crush took place at Velusamypuram, where a large crowd had gathered for a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam rally addressed by Vijay. Forty-two people died and more than 100 were injured, leaving families across the area struggling with the consequences of what had begun as a political gathering.

Vijay said the deaths had brought a sense of grief that was difficult to put into words. He appealed to those affected to draw strength from one another as they remembered their loved ones and faced the anniversary together.

“We will be our own source of solace, support and strength,” he wrote. Paying homage to those who died, Vijay said their memories would remain with their families, friends and others who had known them.

His anniversary message centred on the people left mourning after the disaster. It also acknowledged the pain felt by party members and residents of Karur, where the events of that evening continue to cast a shadow.

For survivors and bereaved families, Sunday marked a year since the rally ended in loss. Vijay’s tribute recalled those who died and urged the community to continue offering comfort and support to those living with the tragedy.
