Samarkand (Uzbekistan), 26 September (H.S.): Friday proved to be a highly successful day for India at the Chess Olympiad, as both the Indian men’s and women’s teams secured victories in the ninth round to strengthen their positions in the tournament. The men’s team defeated Germany 2.5-1.5, while the women’s team overcame hosts Uzbekistan 3-1.

After both teams had been held to draws in the previous round, victories were crucial. The Indian men faced a stern challenge from Germany, but a brilliant win by reigning world champion D. Gukesh helped India secure the match.

Playing with the black pieces on Board 4, Gukesh defeated Alexander Donchenko in 54 moves. Having found himself in a difficult position at one stage, Gukesh remained composed and turned the game around with a fine knight manoeuvre.

The other three games ended in draws, with R. Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin sharing the points with their respective opponents. Following the victory, India moved to 15 match points and remained in joint second place in the Open section. Uzbekistan’s second team and Armenia also have 15 points, while Uzbekistan lead the standings with 16 points. Two rounds remain in the competition.

Women’s Team Also Registers Convincing Victory

In the women’s section, India defeated hosts Uzbekistan 3-1. Koneru Humpy drew her game against Afruza Khamdamova, while Divya Deshmukh defeated Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova and Vantika Agrawal overcame Nilufarkhon Imamkhodjaeva.

Meanwhile, B. Savitha Shri, who had recorded seven consecutive victories in the tournament, was held to a draw for the first time. Her game against Gulidona Karimova ended with the points shared.

India also has 15 points in the women’s section and is in joint second place alongside Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Former champions China lead the standings with 17 points.
