Guwahati, 26 September (HS): Guwahati Police have arrested Ashik Ali in connection with the death of his 21-year-old girlfriend, Nimisha Thakuria, a Sociology student of Gauhati University.

Nimisha, a resident of Dharapur, was found dead late Friday night at Rudra's Kitchen Homestay in the Garchuk-Dharapur area of Guwahati.

According to the information available, Nimisha had left her home around 11 pm on Friday to visit the homestay with a friend. During the night, she reportedly contacted her mother over the phone and alleged that her friend was physically assaulting her. The call was disconnected shortly afterwards, following which her mobile phone was switched off.

Worried over the incident, her family alerted the Azara Police, who launched a search operation. Nimisha was subsequently found dead at the homestay.

Police have sent the body to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Investigators are also probing the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the student's death.-----------
