Bengaluru, 26 September (H.S.): Karnataka will launch a sports and adventure tourism initiative on September 29, combining sporting events with travel experiences to attract visitors and support local businesses.

Tourism Minister K.J. George announced the programme, called “Active Karnataka — Run, Ride, Surf, Explore”, after a meeting with department officials. The launch will be held as part of World Tourism Day activities.

George said the initiative would add a tourism component to major sporting competitions across the state. Visitors travelling for an event will be encouraged to explore the host destination, its food, culture and heritage, turning a race or ride into a longer stay.

The programme will be introduced in phases. In the first phase, the tourism department will work with NEB Sports on marathons, cyclothons and triathlons, alongside other sporting events. Officials plan to create two- to three-day itineraries around the competitions, bringing together accommodation, local cuisine, cultural attractions and sightseeing.

Events and associated travel plans are envisaged for Bengaluru, Mysuru, the coastal region and other destinations. The department expects the combined offerings to draw more travellers and generate additional spending for local communities.

The second phase will expand the initiative to adventure activities, including surfing, kayaking, trail running and cycling. Officials said the range of activities would allow destinations to showcase their natural settings as well as their sporting facilities.

Tourism Secretary Ram Prasad Manohar said the aim was to connect every major sporting event with a tourism experience specific to its location. The department wants participants and spectators to spend time exploring nearby attractions instead of leaving immediately after an event.

Officials said the broader goal was to establish Karnataka as a destination for sports and adventure tourism while creating opportunities for businesses involved in hospitality, travel and related services.
