Thrissur, 25 September (H.S.):The Union government has appointed BJP leader and lawyer Nivedita Subramanian as a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW) for a three-year term. An order announcing her appointment has been issued.

Subramanian, a former Kerala state president of the BJP Mahila Morcha, is currently the party’s Thrissur North district president. A native of Guruvayur, she has contested Assembly and parliamentary elections in Kerala.

She was the BJP candidate from Guruvayur in the 2016 Kerala Assembly election. The party named her for the same constituency in 2021, but her nomination papers were rejected. She later contested the Ponnani Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general election.

The government has also appointed Archana Mishra of Uttar Pradesh as a member of the commission. Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar is the current NCW chairperson.

Subramanian’s appointment gives the commission a member with experience in legal practice, party organisation and electoral politics. Her work in the BJP’s women’s wing has also placed women’s issues at the centre of her political career.

The NCW examines matters concerning the rights and safeguards of women. Its responsibilities include reviewing legal protections, taking up complaints and recommending measures to address problems affecting women. Members participate in the commission’s work alongside the chairperson.

The appointment brings Subramanian from Kerala’s party leadership into a national statutory body. Her three-year tenure comes after more than a decade of involvement in the BJP’s public and organisational activities in the state.

With Subramanian and Mishra joining as members, the commission will continue its work on complaints and policy recommendations under Rahatkar’s chairpersonship. The government order establishes the length of Subramanian’s appointment; the announcement did not specify a separate portfolio for either new member.
