Kolkata/Dhaka, 25 September (H.S.). Police in Mymensingh recovered the body of a 50-year-old goldsmith from a plastic drum found in a canal in the Mymensingh Sadar area. The deceased was identified as Niranjan Chandra Sutradhar, son of Ramendra Chandra Sutradhar of Trishal upazila, Mymensingh district. Sutradhar lived with his family in a rented house near the stadium in Mymensingh city. Police confirmed his identity on Thursday evening.

According to police and local residents, a plastic drum was seen floating near the Begunbari sluice gate on Wednesday morning. Residents notified police, who recovered a blue drum from the canal later that afternoon. Police said Sutradhar’s bloodstained body was found inside after the drum was opened. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination and handed over to his family on Thursday.

Police said the body bore several deep wounds to the head and chest that appeared to have been caused by a sharp weapon. Investigators suspect Sutradhar may have been killed elsewhere and that his body was placed in the drum and put into the canal, possibly to conceal evidence. These remain investigative theories, and no suspects have been publicly identified.

The circumstances of the death will be determined through the post-mortem examination and the ongoing investigation.

The incident comes amid broader concerns raised by Hindu community representatives about the safety of minorities in Bangladesh. Separately, reports from Moulvibazar and Sylhet described the deaths of a Hindu doctor and his father. On September 7, the body of 31-year-old Padmajit Chakraborty Prant, a doctor at Brahmanbaria Medical College, was found hanging inside a house in Sylhet city. On September 17, his father, Purnendu Chakraborty, was found dead on the second floor of the family’s business premises.

The circumstances of those deaths have not been established publicly. Palash Kanti Dey, general secretary of the Bangladesh National Hindu Federation, called for an impartial judicial investigation and expressed concern about minority safety. Police have begun investigating Sutradhar’s death.
