Aichi-Nagoya, 24 September (H.S.): India’s strong showing at the Asian Games 2026 continued on Thursday, with Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar advancing to the quarterfinals of the squash mixed doubles event. Meanwhile, Roshibina Devi won silver in wushu, while the rowing pair of Satnam Singh and Salman Khan secured bronze.

In the mixed doubles encounter, Joshna and Velavan defeated fellow Indians Suraj Chand and Shameena Riaz 2-0, winning 11-7, 11-10. The Indian pair took the opening game 11-7 before clinching the second 11-10.

Suraj and Shameena fought back in the second game after trailing 7-9, levelling the score at 9-9. However, Joshna and Velavan held their nerve and used their experience to close out the contest.

In the women’s 60kg sanda event in wushu, Roshibina Devi won the silver medal after losing 0-2 to China’s Zhang Xiaoyu in the final. Zhang won both rounds 5-0.

Roshibina had previously won a bronze medal in 2018 and a silver medal in 2022. With another silver in 2026, she became the first Indian woman to win three consecutive medals in wushu at the Asian Games.

In the men’s double sculls rowing event, Satnam Singh and Salman Khan won bronze with a time of 6:13.25. The Indian pair remained in second place at the 500m, 1,000m and 1,500m marks but slipped behind in the final stage. China’s Yi Xudi and Nie Yide won gold, while Mekhrojbek Mamatkulov and Pavel Sorin claimed silver.

In the men’s single sculls, Balraj Panwar missed out on a medal after finishing fourth. He was in second place until the 1,500m mark but was overtaken in the final 500m by Uzbekistan’s Shakhboz Kholmurzaev and Japan’s Tatsuya Sakurama. Balraj clocked 6:54.80.

With these medals, India’s Asian Games tally has risen to 14, comprising one gold, six silver and seven bronze medals.
