New Delhi, 24 September (H.S.): Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the country’s leading passenger vehicle manufacturer, has taken a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions from its manufacturing operations by commissioning a 300-kilowatt green hydrogen electrolyser plant at its Manesar facility in Haryana.

The company on Thursday commissioned the 300-kilowatt green hydrogen plant at its Manesar manufacturing facility as a pilot project. Maruti Suzuki India said the green hydrogen produced at the plant will be blended with natural gas and used as fuel in manufacturing processes.

According to the company, the project will enable greater utilisation of solar energy generated at the Manesar plant. The green hydrogen produced through the facility will be combined with natural gas for use as fuel in manufacturing operations.

Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Hisashi Takeuchi said the company aims to reduce carbon emissions from its manufacturing operations from the current level of 6.15 lakh tonnes to 2.66 lakh tonnes by financial year 2030-31 through the adoption of various clean technologies.

Takeuchi said the company plans to expand the use of green hydrogen technology at its manufacturing facilities in Haryana and Gujarat based on the experience and learnings gained from the pilot project.

“The commissioning of our 300-kilowatt green hydrogen plant is aligned with the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission,” Takeuchi said.

He further said Maruti Suzuki is in the final stages of setting up a biogas plant with a capacity to produce 10 tonnes of biogas per day at its Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana. The plant is scheduled to be commissioned during the current financial year 2026-27.

The company has also recently commissioned a battery energy storage system with a capacity of one megawatt-hour at its Kharkhoda facility.

In addition, the Board of Directors of Maruti Suzuki India has recently approved four compressed biogas (CBG) projects, with a total budget allocation of Rs. 561 crore.

The company said these initiatives form part of its broader efforts to adopt cleaner energy sources and reduce the carbon footprint of its manufacturing operations.
