Guwahati, 24 September (HS): The Assam Cabinet has approved the Assam Muslim Marriage Registration Rules, 2026, paving the way for registration of marriages of members of the Muslim community under a new regulatory framework. Assam chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has addressed a press conference after the Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

As per the Cabinet decision, the registration facility will initially be provided through the designated registration system. The government plans to subsequently expand the service to the panchayat level to facilitate easier access to marriage registration.

In another major decision ahead of Durga Puja, the Cabinet approved a special festive-season payment for beneficiaries of the Arunodoi scheme. Beneficiaries will receive ₹1,500 in October, higher than the regular monthly assistance of ₹1,250.

The enhanced amount has been announced as a special Puja bonus to provide additional financial support to eligible households during the festive period. The Arunodoi scheme provides monthly assistance to economically vulnerable families.

The Cabinet also revised the proposed price of subsidised sugar and dal for October. Both commodities will be made available at ₹100, instead of the earlier proposed price of ₹105.

The decisions form part of a series of welfare and administrative measures announced by the state government ahead of the festive season.------------
