North 24 Parganas, 23 September (H.S.): Naihati police arrested Trinamool Congress leader and INTTUC president Vishnu Adhikari from Indore in Madhya Pradesh early Wednesday in connection with cases involving alleged extortion and offences under the Arms Act, police sources said. He is reportedly known in local political circles as being close to TMC leader and MP Partha Bhowmick.

According to police sources, Adhikari had been wanted in connection with allegations including extortion, attempting to take possession of land through intimidation and an attempt to murder. Police said further allegations could emerge as the investigation progresses.

Investigators reportedly traced Adhikari’s location to Indore and subsequently conducted an operation there, leading to his arrest. Preparations are underway to bring him back to Naihati on transit remand.

After reaching Naihati, Adhikari is expected to be produced before a court, where police are likely to seek further custody for questioning.

Earlier, allegations had also been raised against Adhikari in connection with the alleged forcible takeover of a house in Naihati. The complainant alleged that the property was taken over at gunpoint in 2021. Adhikari’s wife, however, had denied the allegations and claimed that the property had been legally purchased for Rs 25 lakh.

A separate case concerning the alleged forcible takeover of the property had earlier led to the arrest of Adhikari’s wife, Ishani Sarkar Adhikari.
