Kolkata, 23 September (H.S.): Marking a significant legal victory in the ongoing crackdown against narcotics trafficking, the Special Task Force of the West Bengal Police secured the conviction of two drug traffickers, each sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The Additional District and Sessions Judge, 1st Court, Krishnanagar, delivered the verdict in Nadia district, addressing a major commercial contraband haul.

In its judgment delivered on 22 September 2026, the court also imposed a fine of ₹2,00,000 on each of the convicts. In the event of default in paying the fine, both convicts will undergo an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment and will remain liable to pay an additional penalty of ₹1,00,000.

According to an official statement issued by the Special Task Force on Wednesday morning, the case traces back to 11 February 2024, when sleuths executed a major interdiction. Acting on actionable intelligence, the agency intercepted a 12-wheeler truck in the Mukundapur area under the jurisdiction of the Nabadwip Police Station in Nadia district. A meticulous search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 447.2 kilograms of cannabis concealed inside a specially fabricated secret chamber within the truck. The two occupants, identified as Alam Mondal and Alamin Mondal, were apprehended on the spot.

The investigation was spearheaded by Investigating Officer Mahitosh Roy, who compiled scientific and forensic evidence before filing a comprehensive charge sheet before the competent court. During the trial, Special Public Prosecutor Subedi Sanyal presented the prosecution's case, successfully establishing the guilt of the accused through witness testimonies and material evidence. The agency termed the decisive conviction a milestone achievement in the collective national effort towards realizing a drug-free India.
