Thiruvananthapuram, 22 September (H.S.): Kerala is likely to experience isolated rainfall on Tuesday, although no district has been placed under a special weather alert, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Isolated areas in Thrissur and Malappuram districts may receive light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph. Light rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

The weather conditions are being influenced by a well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal.

It may strengthen further into a deep depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 24 hours. Continuing in a west-northwesterly direction, the system is likely to approach the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts by Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over central Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas at an altitude of between 4.5 km and 7.6 km above mean sea level.

A trough extending from the southeast Arabian Sea to the cyclonic circulation is also passing across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the southwest Bay of Bengal. The circulation is linked to the developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

Under the influence of these weather systems, Kerala is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall until Friday. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in parts of the state on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The IMD has also warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph may occur at isolated places across Kerala on Tuesday. Authorities have advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid staying in exposed areas.
