Kolkata, 22 September (H.S.) : The police have arrested four individuals in two separate cases in connection with the massive unrest and tension that erupted at Bhangar College on Monday. To prevent any further escalation, a strong police picket was deployed at the main gates of the campus on Tuesday morning, and stringent security measures have been implemented.

The controversy ignited on Monday afternoon when the newly appointed president of the college's governing body, BJP leader Sayantan Basu, arrived at the campus.

According to police sources, the four arrested accused have been identified as Shahrukh Akhtar Ali Molla, Aslam Habib, Rabiul Mistry, and Rabiul Zaman Sheikh.

Rabiul Mistry and Rabiul Zaman were arrested based on a suo motu case registered by the Bhangar police station. According to the police, they face serious charges, including unlawful assembly, trespassing into the college premises, and obstructing the governing body president from discharging his duties.

Meanwhile, Shahrukh and Aslam were apprehended for allegedly making objectionable remarks against female students supporting the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Their arrests followed a written complaint lodged by a faction of ABVP supporters at the local police station.

Authorities confirmed that all four accused will be produced before the Baruipur court on Tuesday.

The unrest was triggered during Basu's maiden visit to the institution after assuming charge as the governing body president. Local sources reported that as soon as his vehicle reached the college gate, supporters of the Left-wing student organization (SFI) and the ISF staged a fierce protest. In response, ABVP cadres began shouting counter-slogans, rapidly turning the campus into a battleground. The situation escalated into a physical scuffle before a heavy police contingent rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The police continue to maintain a strict vigil over the college and its surrounding areas to avert any further untoward incidents.
