Thiruvananthapuram, 21 September (H.S.): Kerala remains on high alert as the India Meteorological Department warned of intense rainfall in several parts of the state on Monday.

An orange alert has been issued for six districts—Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram—following the latest weather warning issued at 4 am. The alert, initially valid for three hours, cautioned residents and local authorities about the possibility of intense spells of rain.

The IMD said isolated places in these districts could experience thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph. Residents have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near weak structures.

Meanwhile, isolated light rainfall is likely in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts. Weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled, with rainfall likely to continue across Kerala until September 24.

Authorities have warned that intense rainfall could cause waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions, reduced visibility and damage to vulnerable structures. People living near rivers, streams, hilly areas and landslide-prone regions have been urged to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by district administrations.

Fishermen and coastal residents have also been advised to closely monitor weather warnings before venturing into the sea. Emergency response teams have been directed to remain prepared to handle rain-related incidents.

The state government is monitoring the situation, while district authorities have been asked to take precautionary measures wherever necessary. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and stay updated through official weather bulletins.
