Idukki, 20 September (H.S.): Two people were killed after a landslide struck a shed at Kottakamboor in Vattavada, Idukki district, on Sunday evening following nearly three hours of continuous heavy rain in the region.

The deceased were identified as Balakrishnan, a resident of Kottakamboor, and his sister Chinnu. They were inside the shed when a large quantity of soil and debris suddenly slid down and fell on the structure, trapping them underneath.Balakrishnan's wife Mariamma is critical and admitted in a hospital.

Local residents who rushed to the spot immediately launched rescue efforts and attempted to remove the soil and debris. However, the siblings could not be saved. Their bodies were recovered during the search operation.

The landslide occurred after Vattavada and nearby areas received intense rainfall for about three hours. The downpour is suspected to have loosened the soil on the slope, triggering the sudden collapse. The shed was extensively damaged after being buried under the debris.

As soon as information about the incident was received, Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Munnar and police officers from Devikulam reached the area. They joined local residents in clearing the debris and searching the affected site.

Rescue teams continued their operations to determine whether anyone else had been trapped beneath the soil. Officials had not immediately confirmed the presence of any additional persons under the debris.

Search efforts remained focused on the shed and the surrounding debris-covered area nearby.

Persistent rain and difficult terrain posed challenges to the rescue personnel. The authorities were closely monitoring the site amid concerns over the possibility of further soil movement in the landslide-prone area.

Police and revenue officials are expected to conduct a detailed inspection to assess the extent of the damage and establish the circumstances that led to the incident. Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to remain cautious as heavy rainfall continues in the high-range region.
