Pune, 20 September (H.S.): A Namghar, a traditional community institution central to Assam's Neo-Vaishnavite tradition, will be inaugurated in Pune as part of an initiative aimed at strengthening cultural and emotional ties between Assam, Maharashtra and other parts of the country.

The Namghar has been established at the Gujarwadi Katraj campus of Sarhad Pune, an organisation working towards national integration and supporting students from conflict-affected and border regions.

Traditionally serving as a place of prayer, community interaction and cultural expression, the Namghar holds an important place in Assam's social and cultural life. The institution was pioneered by Srimanta Sankardev, the 15th-16th century Assamese saint and social reformer, as part of the Neo-Vaishnavite movement.

The initiative seeks to provide a platform for preserving and promoting Assam's cultural traditions outside the state while fostering greater cultural understanding and connections with Maharashtra and other regions.

The Pune Namghar is expected to serve as a space for community gatherings, prayer and cultural activities, reflecting the traditions associated with Assam's Neo-Vaishnavite heritage.
