Guwahati, 20 September (HS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited’s 3,200-MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project at Chapor in Dhubri district, marking a major investment in the state’s power sector.

The project, estimated to cost around ₹48,000 crore, is expected to provide employment to around 20,000 people during the construction phase and create nearly 5,000 permanent jobs once fully operational. Power generation is scheduled to begin in phases from December 2030.

Adani Group Director Jeet Adani said the project would comprise four units of 800 MW each and use advanced ultra-supercritical technology with high-efficiency systems and modern environmental safeguards.

The Chapor project forms part of an overall ₹63,000-crore investment planned by the Adani Group in Assam’s power sector. Of this, around ₹48,000 crore will be invested in the thermal power project, while approximately ₹15,000 crore will be invested through Adani Green Energy Limited in two pumped-storage power projects with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW.

Adani Energy Solutions Limited is also implementing a smart meter project across Assam, which is expected to modernise the state’s power distribution network.

Sarma said Assam was rapidly emerging as a major power hub in the Northeast and described the Chapor project as a significant outcome of the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investors’ Summit. He said the project would not only generate employment but also boost economic activity and SGST revenue while creating opportunities for local industries, contractors and small businesses.

Jeet Adani said the group’s investments in Assam across power, aviation and cement sectors would exceed ₹80,000 crore. He said these projects were expected to contribute to infrastructure development, employment generation and new economic opportunities across the state over the next three to four years.

He said the Chapor project would also create business opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, transport operators and service providers. The project, he added, would strengthen Assam’s position as a potential energy hub because of its strategic geographical location.

The group said its investments in Assam also include the newly constructed Terminal 2 at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, which became fully operational for passengers on February 22, 2026.

Adani Foundation has also undertaken social initiatives in Assam, including distribution of food, medicines and sanitation materials to more than 8,000 flood-affected families in Sivasagar and Dhemaji. It is implementing programmes related to education, healthcare, livelihoods, community infrastructure and climate awareness in 19 villages in Kamrup Rural district.

Adani Power was awarded the contract for the 3,200-MW project through a competitive bidding process in October 2025 and subsequently received the formal Letter of Award from Assam Power Distribution Company Limited in November 2025.

The company currently operates 13 thermal power projects across nine states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Rajasthan, with an aggregate thermal power generation capacity of 18,290 MW, besides a 40-MW solar power project in Gujarat.------------
