Hyderabad, September 2 (H.S.): The historic Gollala Gudi Temple at Palampet in Mulugu district of Telangana, known for its intricate carvings and Kakatiya-era architectural features, has been declared a Monument of National Importance by the government, officials said on Wednesday.

The temple, an ancient Trikutalaya dating back to the Kakatiya period, is located near the Ramappa Temple, which is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Ministry of Culture issued the notification on August 31 declaring the historic temple a monument of national importance. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will oversee its protection and conservation in accordance with the provisions applicable to monuments of national importance.

The Gollala Gudi Temple is noted for its architectural design and stone carvings, reflecting the artistic traditions of the Kakatiya period. Its location in Palampet places it within the wider historical and architectural landscape associated with the Kakatiya heritage of Telangana.

The declaration gives the temple a formal status under the national framework for the protection of historically and archaeologically significant monuments. It is expected to strengthen efforts to preserve the structure and its architectural features for future generations.

The Ministry of Culture, while announcing the notification, highlighted the temple's historical and architectural significance and its proximity to the UNESCO-listed Ramappa Temple.

The Kakatiya period is recognised for its distinctive temple architecture, with Ramappa and other monuments in the region representing important examples of the dynasty's artistic and engineering traditions.

With the latest notification, the Gollala Gudi Temple joins the list of protected heritage structures considered to have national importance, adding another significant site to Telangana's rich architectural heritage.
