Kolkata, 19 September (H.S.) : The hanging body of a Kolkata Police commando was recovered from a fourth-floor bathroom at the Alipore Police Training School (PTS) on Saturday. The deceased police officer has been identified as 49-year-old Deepak Tamang. He was rescued from the PTS barracks in a bleeding and unconscious state and immediately rushed to the SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. According to initial estimates by the Lalbazar headquarters, it is believed that the officer died by suicide due to mental depression. However, the police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to this tragic incident.
According to police and PTS sources, the fourth-floor toilet of the commando barrack remained locked from the inside for an extended period at around 9:45 AM on Saturday. Suspicion grew among his colleagues when they called out to him and received no response. Upon breaking down the door, they discovered a horrific scene. Tamang was found hanging from the toilet's overhead pipeline, using a traditional towel (gamcha) as a noose. His colleagues immediately brought him down and rushed him to the emergency department of SSKM Hospital, but his life could not be saved.
The deceased commando originally hailed from the Seven Mile area of Kalimpong. He had been serving in the Kolkata Police commando force as a DI for a long time. He was widely recognized within the police department as a highly skilled and reputed officer. His colleagues are in deep shock over the sudden and fatal step taken by the brave commando and are unable to comprehend the actual reason behind it.
Based on the preliminary investigation report, investigating officers stated that the ligature marks on his neck and other initial signs point towards a case of suicide. The police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination and have officially informed the deceased's family in Kalimpong. While no written complaint or FIR has been lodged so far, the police have taken suo motu cognizance, registered an unnatural death case, and initiated further legal proceedings.
