Mumbai, 19 Sept (HS): A second year BTech student of IIT Bombay committed

suicide, in the institute’s campus. This is the third case of suicide by IIT Bombay

student in the last six months. The suicide led to the BTech students started

agitation demanding transparency in conducting examination and transparency in

the administration.

According

to preliminary information the student of Energy Science and Engineering

Department during an examination was found uploading question paper ion ChatGPT

to find answers to the questions. After that the teachers in the subject and

Head of the Department had discussion with the student. However, no action against

him was initiated, the teachers claimed. The student was also assured that his

action will not in any way affect his career.

The

student after the discussion went to his room and was found dead in the

evening. The police was informed and investigation initiated.

The

students, however, claimed that he was threatened rustication for one year and

vacating the hostel for one year. The student, Sahil Wakode, committed suicide

due to fear of rustication, the students claimed. However, the allegations have

not been substantiated.

Heavy

police bandobast under the leadership of senior police officer Dattatray

Nalavade. The students, about 400 in number, have started agitation against the

IIT administration. Director Prof Shrish Kedare met the students and tried to

pacify them. The ongoing examination was postponed.
