Guwahati, 19 September (HS): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged investors and industry stakeholders to explore emerging opportunities in the state’s semiconductor sector, particularly with the Tata Electronics semiconductor assembly, testing and packaging (OSAT) facility at Jagiroad scheduled to be commissioned in December this year.

Interacting with industrialists and other stakeholders on the sidelines of SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, Sarma said the Assam government was taking steps to support the Tata OSAT project through enabling policies, institutional assistance and investor-friendly frameworks.

The Chief Minister said Assam’s semiconductor ecosystem was expanding beyond chip design and assembly into areas such as fabrication, advanced packaging, equipment, materials, research and talent development.

The Tata OSAT facility at Jagiroad, once operational, will have a capacity to produce 48 million chips a day and is expected to generate around 27,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, he said.

Sarma also highlighted Assam’s geographical advantage as a gateway to Southeast Asia and ASEAN markets, saying the state could develop a full-stack semiconductor ecosystem covering chip design, fabrication, packaging and testing with the right investments and infrastructure.

In a post on X, Sarma said India’s semiconductor mission was entering a new phase under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and noted that Assam was becoming part of the country’s semiconductor journey.

He said SEMICON India 2026 showcased India’s growing capabilities in chip design, manufacturing, research and the wider electronics ecosystem, adding that the developments would strengthen the country’s technology and manufacturing capabilities.

The three-day SEMICON India 2026, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, is being organised by the India Semiconductor Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in partnership with SEMI and industry associations.

More than 500 companies from over 20 countries are participating in the event, which also features 10 State Pavilions and seven Country Pavilions, including those representing the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Malaysia and Singapore.

Sarma said the global platform would provide Assam an opportunity to engage with leading companies and investors and showcase its potential as an emerging destination for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing.------------
