New Delhi, 19 September (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed grief over the deaths of eight people after a car was swept away by a rain-swollen drain in Madhya Pradesh’s Agar Malwa district. The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the accident.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), in a post on X, said, “The accident in Agar Malwa, Madhya Pradesh, is extremely painful. I express my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones.”

PM Modi said the next of kin of each person who lost their life in the accident would be provided an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. He also said that Rs 50,000 would be provided to those injured in the accident.

It may be noted that a drain near the Maa Baglamukhi Temple in Nalkheda, Agar Malwa district, had overflowed following heavy rainfall. During this time, a car carrying devotees from Odisha who had travelled from Ujjain was swept away by the strong current of the water. Eight people, including three children, died in the accident.

According to reports, the water level in the drain had risen following heavy rainfall in the area throughout the night, leading to the accident.
