Net Direct Tax Collection Rises 13% to Over Rs 12.12 Lakh Crore

New Delhi, 18 September (H.S.): There is encouraging news for the country’s economy and government finances, with the government’s net direct tax collection rising 13 per cent to more than Rs 12.12 lakh crore during the current financial year 2026-27 up to September 17. The increase has been driven primarily by higher advance tax collections.

According to data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), gross direct tax collection rose 15 per cent to more than Rs 14.32 lakh crore as of September 17. Tax refunds, meanwhile, increased 29.19 per cent to over Rs 2.20 lakh crore.

Corporate tax collection increased 19.48 per cent to around Rs 5.56 lakh crore during the period. Non-corporate tax collection, which includes taxes paid by individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), rose 6 per cent to more than Rs 6.16 lakh crore.

Securities Transaction Tax (STT) collection also recorded a significant increase. Between April 1 and September 17, STT collections rose 53 per cent to Rs 40,214 crore.

The data showed that advance tax collection had increased 16.18 per cent to around Rs 5.22 lakh crore as of September 17. Within this, advance corporate tax payments rose 18 per cent to more than Rs 4.16 lakh crore, while non-corporate advance tax payments increased 9.24 per cent to Rs 1.06 lakh crore.
