Kolkata, 18 September (H.S.) : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning forecasting widespread rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across southern West Bengal, alongside heavy downpours in the sub-Himalayan northern districts on Friday.

According to the meteorological office, convective weather activity will remain pronounced across the Gangetic plains of South Bengal. Districts including Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, and both Purba and Paschim Bardhaman are likely to witness scattered rain accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. The coastal and south-western belts are expected to experience heightened weather activity. In Paschim Medinipur, wind gusts reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h alongside localized thundershowers are anticipated, with temperatures hovering between a minimum of 26°C and a maximum of 34°C.

In North Bengal, rainfall activity will persist across the sub-Himalayan zone, encompassing Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Uttar Dinajpur. The weather bureau has placed these northern districts on alert for heavy localized spells.

Kolkata and adjoining metropolitan regions are forecast to see predominantly overcast skies throughout the day, interspersed with passing showers and thunder activity. Citing risks associated with sudden lightning strikes and strong wind gusts, authorities have advised residents to exercise caution and avoid open areas during storm activity. The active monsoon conditions across South Bengal are expected to continue through September 20, with a marked reduction in weather intensity projected from September 21 onward.
