Kolkata, 18 September (H.S.) : In a mounting wave of legal troubles, a fresh First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at the Garhbeta police station in Paschim Medinipur district against Sumit Roy, the personal assistant of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, and two others in connection with an alleged government recruitment scam. The new charges surface while Roy is already under investigation for a separate land dispute case.

According to the complaint, which was filed by an individual identifying as a Trinamool Congress worker, a total of Rs 67 lakh was collected from approximately 90 job aspirants in multiple phases. The complainant alleged that agents initially contacted the candidates, demanding several lakhs for each government post, and collected the first installment of the bribe.

The aspirants were later called to Kolkata and allegedly introduced to Sumit Roy at a cafe on Lake Road in South Kolkata. The FIR claims that further cash transactions took place during this meeting upon assurances of securing the jobs. To make the recruitment process appear authentic, candidates were reportedly handed OMR sheets to fill out and were subsequently instructed to undergo medical examinations in anticipation of their appointments.

It remains a matter of police investigation whether any of these candidates actually secured government employment, whether the provided documents and OMR sheets were forged, and if more individuals were involved in the organized financial transactions.

Roy is currently in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for his alleged involvement in a land scam case in Salboni, Paschim Medinipur. He was arrested on September 10, and a local court remanded him to eight days of police custody the following day.

Notably, this is not the first recruitment-related allegation against Roy. A similar case of cheating and forgery under the pretext of providing jobs was previously registered against him at the Debra police station in Paschim Medinipur. The police are now thoroughly investigating the allegations in the Garhbeta complaint, tracing the money trail, and examining the specific roles of the other accused named in the FIR.
