Thiruvananthapuram, 17 September (H.S.):Kerala has recorded a 28 per cent deficit in monsoon rainfall this season, with Wayanad and Idukki reporting the sharpest decline, according to data released by the India Meteorological Department.

The figures, covering the period from June 1 to September 17, show that Wayanad received 54 per cent less rainfall than normal—the highest deficit among the districts. Idukki followed with a shortfall of 47 per cent.

The substantial decline has raised concern as Wayanad and Idukki are normally among the districts receiving the heaviest rainfall during the southwest monsoon. The prolonged dry spell has contributed to rising temperatures across Kerala and aggravated the State’s continuing power crisis.

The weakening of this year’s monsoon has been primarily attributed to the El Niño weather phenomenon. Poor rainfall has reduced water inflows into reservoirs at a time when electricity consumption is increasing because of unusually warm conditions.

However, the IMD has predicted rain in several districts over the coming days. A cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal within two days and could intensify into a low-pressure area by Saturday.

If the system strengthens as forecast, Kerala may receive isolated heavy rainfall on some days during the next two weeks. However, it remains uncertain whether the expected showers will be widespread or sufficient to compensate for the existing seasonal deficit and provide lasting relief from the heat.

Punalur recorded the State’s highest temperature on Thursday, with the mercury touching 37 degrees Celsius for the first time this season. Thiruvananthapuram city reported the next-highest temperature.

The combination of deficient rainfall, depleted reservoir inflows and rising temperatures has intensified concerns over Kerala’s water and electricity situation. Authorities are closely monitoring the developing weather system in the Bay of Bengal, hoping that it will bring meaningful rainfall to the State.
