New Delhi, 16 September (H.S.): The Supreme Court has rejected a plea seeking changes to the high-powered committee constituted to investigate the violence and police action during student protests at Jantar Mantar. The petition had questioned the impartiality of some members of the committee. The court observed that the allegations were based on assumptions, conjecture and speculation and were not supported by any credible evidence.

On August 20, the Supreme Court had constituted a five-member high-powered committee to investigate matters related to the protests by the Kakroach Janta Party. The committee was formed under the chairmanship of former Supreme Court judge Justice R. Subhash Reddy to examine all aspects associated with the protests.

The committee comprises former judge Justice Ravi Shankar Jha, former judge Justice Shalinder Kaur, former CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla and former Director General of Police Dr L.R. Bishnoi.

The committee has been tasked with examining allegations of police excesses as well as incidents involving violence against police personnel in connection with the protests.
