Thiruvananthapuram, 16 September (H.S.): Kerala is expected to experience heavy rain over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam and Idukki districts.

According to the latest forecast, isolated areas across the state are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall until September 21. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong, gusty winds are also expected in several places during this period.

Wind speeds could reach between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour, posing a risk to weak structures, trees and power lines. People have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter beneath trees or near electric poles.

The weather department has also warned of high waves and the 'kallakkadal' phenomenon along the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Coastal residents and fishermen have been asked to exercise caution and avoid venturing into the sea when restrictions are in force.

Kallakkadal refers to sudden sea swells that can cause waves to surge onto the shore without any visible change in the local weather. Such waves could lead to coastal flooding and damage to boats and fishing equipment kept close to the shoreline.

Authorities have urged people living in high-range regions, landslide-prone locations and low-lying areas to remain particularly vigilant as rainfall intensifies. Residents near rivers, streams and other water bodies should closely monitor any sudden rise in water levels.

Motorists have also been advised to exercise caution, particularly on waterlogged roads and routes passing through hilly terrain. Unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain should be avoided.

The public must closely follow the instructions issued by the weather department, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority and district administrations. Emergency response teams are expected to monitor vulnerable areas and take precautionary measures if the rainfall intensifies.
