Guwahati, 15 September (HS): The family of Ramanuj Goswami, who died while allegedly attempting to escape from police custody, has agreed to take custody of his body from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Goswami’s father collected the body from the hospital on Tuesday after the family thoroughly examined it.

The body was kept at the GMCH mortuary after Goswami’s father had initially refused to accept it, alleging that his son had been deliberately killed by police in an encounter. Following discussions with the police, the family agreed to take custody of the body.

The body will now be taken to the family residence in Gauripur, where Goswami’s last rites will be performed.

Goswami, who was arrested in connection with the alleged murder of his wife Riya in Guwahati’s Basisthpur area, died on Monday morning after he allegedly pushed two policemen and jumped from Narakasur Hill while being taken for a medical examination. Police said he was seriously injured in the fall and later succumbed at GMCH.

Goswami had allegedly surrendered before police hours after his wife’s murder and was in seven-day police remand. He was scheduled to be produced before the CJM court on Monday.-----------
